This new edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine concentrates more on the newer kinds of occupational disease including those (like “RSI” and pesticide poisoning) where exposure and effects are difficult to understand. There is specific emphasis on work, health and wellbeing, with links to public health, health promotion, the value of work, disabled people at work, the aging workforce, vocational rehabilitation, evidence based practice, and further chapters on the health effects of climate change and of occupational health and safety in relation to migration and terrorism.
There exists a two-way relationship in which periodontal disease in an individual may be a powerful influence on an individual’s systemic health or disease as well as the more customarily understood role that systemic disease may have in influencing an individual’s periodontal health or disease. Therefore, oral health is an important component of general health, and individuals with periodontitis may be at risk for other diseases as well. The impact of oral infection on systemic health thus defines the new branch of periodontology termed “periodontal medicine”.
Major goals of health care in the 21st century are to make health care more efficient and less costly. These goals can be accomplished by implementation of evidence-based care; greater coordination of patient care; implementation of preventive care and wellness measures; and the evaluation of outcomes of care to identify improved ways to provide care. A universal patient medical record can help achieve these goals of more efficient and less costly health care.
'Periodontal Medicine' is a broad term that defines a rapidly emerging branch of Periodontology, focusing on strong relationship between periodontal health or disease and systemic health or disease. There is a two-way relationship in which periodontal disease in an individual may be a powerful influence on an individual’s systemic health or disease as well as the more customarily understood role that systemic disease may have in influencing an individual’s periodontal health or disease. This book provides a systems-based approach to periodontology and offers a scientific roadmap of the interactions which can lead to periodontal disease.
